A true example of ‘Loving Art till the last breath’
Born on 19th May, 1983 in Matheran,Bombay(now Maharashtra) , GIRISH KARNAD was an indian actor, film director, kannada writer, playwright and a Rhodes scholar. He was a recipient of the 1998 Jnanpith award, the highest literary honour conferred in India.
Karnad is known as a play wright. His plays, written in kannada, have been translated into english and some Indian languages. Karnad found a new approach of drawing historical and mythological sources to take control over contemporary themes of modern man. Karnad made his acting as well as screenwriting debut in a kannada movie, Samskara(1970). The movie won the first President’s Golden Lotus Award for Kannada cinema.
His contribution to the Art and film industry is infinite. Girish Karnad had been honoured with more than 35 awards for his excellence in literature and film making. He was last seen in 2017 Tiger Zinda Hai( Bollywood movie) in which he played the character of Shenoy, RAW head.
“ He was not keeping well during the shoot of Tiger Zinda Hai but that didn’t stop him from getting his work done, He had some issue with his lungs and despite that, he gave his 100 percent and didn’t complain even once. I am going to miss Girish sir and will pray for him and his family” said Ali Abbas Zafar, Director of Tiger Zinda Hai.
Girish Karnad passed away on Monday(10 June,2019) in Bengaluru at the age of 81.
