THE CHARM OF KALAMKARI ART

With a total of twenty-three tedious steps, the mere intricacy of the Kalamkari Art is enough to bewitch the mind. Primarily using the earthly colors of rust, mustard and indigo, all the vibrant colors you witness in Kalamkari Art are derived from natural sources with little to no traces of chemicals and other artificial substances. Assimilating the minute details, the Kalamkari artists use a ‘tamarind twig’ as a pen, sketching the gracious motifs of flora and fauna and the gods and goddesses of the Hindu mythology.

Predominant in the states of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, the Kalamkari Art has evolved from its initial two forms of ‘Srikalahasti’ style and ‘Machilipatnam’ style. While the former derives its inspiration from Hindu mythology etching out the scenes from epics and folklore, the latter draws its essence from the intricate hand paintings executed by hand-carved traditional blocks. However, under the new forms of ‘Andhra Kalamkari’ and ‘Gujarat Kalamkari’, inspiration is drawn from the architectural marvels and mythological characters.

THE GRACE OF TANJORE ART

Radiating a three-dimensional effect with the use of pearls and semi-precious stones and adorned with an entire spectrum of vibrant colors, the Tanjore paintings enchants the eyes of the people, making them drown in this aura of colors. Mostly revolving around the essence of Hindu Gods and Goddesses, the paintings are renowned for their diffusing charisma. With its origination from South India, this form of painting has been influenced over the centuries from a fusion of cultures.

THE VIBRANCE OF PHAD ART

With all the vibrant colors of the ‘Phad’ painting being extracted tediously from natural sources, the art form confers to a deeper meaning. With each of the vivid colors being associated with a certain element of the painting, it is quite rightful to say that the Phad paintings depict the ideal amalgamation of creativity and symbolism. Adorned with detailed intricacy, each component of the Phad paintings are depicted with a specified color such as orange for limbs, green for nature and blur for curtains, hence giving art the depiction of a travelling temple. Considered to be among the most extraordinary art forms, the Phad paintings offer the ideal fusion of the various constituents of the vibrant Indian culture.
